What is 3D Food Printing and Why?

3D food printing uses real food ingredients – think of the food as “ink” – combined with food safe 3D printing technology to 3D print food. Fresh food, such as sweet potatoes, hummus, chocolate, avocado, broccoli, chicken, alternative proteins, masa – literally an endless combination of foods – is extruded line-by-line in an additive, layered manner by a 3D food printer in exacting sizes, shapes and designs.

Why!? Because 3D Food Printing has numerous benefits! Chefs can explore endless creativity and chef storytelling with designs, tastes and textures never before experienced in the culinary world, plus handle repetitive precision work with automated ease. Hospital and nursing home environments, can provide beautiful, appetizing meals for people with dysphagia – plus print with precise personalized portions and nutritional content – including adding supplements or even medications. Food brands and food tech companies can explore personalization, reduction of food waste, and sustainability. And home users can think of a 3D food printer as a kitchen appliance that puts new focus on helping you prepare fresh, nutritious food.

Who uses 3D Food Printers?

Our 3D food printers are already being used worldwide in gourmet restaurants, bakeries, test kitchens, research institutes, universities, hospitals and nursing homes.

Our current focus is professional kitchen users, chefs, universities, food tech and food brand companies – and early home users. It is predicted 3D food printers will become a common kitchen appliance in both home and professional kitchens within the next 10 to 12 years, just like ovens and microwaves are common today.

Also expect 3D Food Printers to be used in increasingly new and profound ways. NASA and various militaries around the world, for example, are exploring the benefits of 3D food printers to personalize nutrition and offer long lasting shelf life. Other research groups are looking to 3D food printing to solve world hunger.

What kinds of foods can Foodini print?

Foodini is an open capsule system – which means we do not sell pre-filled capsules or control ingredients – YOU control ingredients by loading the capsules with any food as you wish. The ingredients and combinations you can prepare are virtually endless, from fruits and vegetables to doughs, meat, fish, poultry, dairy products, alternative proteins, sauces and spreads, nutritional supplements, and more.

Are you trying to replace chefs or traditional cooking methods?

Not at all! Foodini is a kitchen appliance to help users make fresh, nutritious, beautifully designed foods from ingredients the user prepares. Think of 3D food printers as an appliance to assist with food preparation. We are not proposing every food you eat should be 3D printed.

Rather, Foodini helps automate tasks by helping with repetitive shaping, forming, layering or assembly, and creates amazing food designs, offers new textures or taste combinations, personalizes nutrition, and more. From shaping pretzels, to forming gnocchi, layering ravioli, or personalizing nutrition in a hospital or patient care facility, Foodini can help. It’s also designed to help get people back into kitchens, cooking with fresh foods, and getting away from buying processed, packaged, pre-made foods.

Is Foodini easy to clean?

Yes! Foodini is designed so most of the moving parts are hidden to not only provide a clean, sleek look, but also make everything easy to clean. The food capsules that hold the food are multi-piece food grade stainless steel, which easily disassemble and are dishwasher safe. The inside of the machine is very easy to wipe down with a damp cloth or sponge.  Foodini has been thoughtfully designed to be as easy to clean as possible.

What makes Foodini unique compared to other 3D food printers?

Foodini is the first real food 3D printer to print a wide range of foods, from savory to sweet. Many other food printers focus on only a small amount of printable ingredients, for example, only chocolate or sugar. However, with Foodini’s open capsule system, you choose and prepare your ingredients. Literally thousands of combinations of 100% real, fresh food. We also do not require gels, elixirs or other unnatural, artificial compositions to create food shapes. From the day Foodini was initially conceived, it was built to help people eat healthier using their own fresh ingredients. Additional differentiating factors include that Foodini is made from food-grade/safe materials – and with 5 food capsules, you don’t have to manually change out food capsules for different ingredients when printing. Additional key differentiators include ISO 9001 manufacturing and continued research and development, including: food personalization, 3D food modeling, food waste reduction, sustainability, and continuous upgrades to onboard software, aesthetics, and the included recipe library. Foodini has been designed as a sleek countertop appliance, with technical moving parts cleverly hidden from view, and comes with a manufacturer’s one year warranty for professional users and two years for home users.

How much does Foodini Cost?

Foodini is priced at $4,000 (USD). In addition to receiving everything you need to print, including Foodini 3D printer and full accessory kit with your order, you also receive free direct support and guidance directly from the Natural Machines team to create your own prints with your own fresh ingredients.

How long will Foodini last? What is the average lifetime of the printer?

Foodini has an industry standard warranty of 1 year for professionals and 2 years for home users. However, Foodini is being manufactured with ISO 9001 standards to be a high quality kitchen appliance and has been designed to last much longer. There are no ongoing maintenance costs with Foodini.

Is Foodini in demand?

Yes! The Foodini brand has interest worldwide from over 90 countries and counting and is already being used by world class Michelin star chefs, universities, hospitals, hotels, food brands, and more.

Can 3D food printing help lessen food waste and increase sustainability?

Yes! 3D food printing with Foodini can reduce food waste in many areas, from a chef kitchen and throughout the food value chain.

Chefs can  customize portion sizes to print only what will be eaten and nothing more, and print excess food that has been over purchased in exciting shapes and designs to give food new interest.

Food traditionally classified as food waste – such as “ugly” fruits, vegetables, and cuts of meat or seafood by-catch, which still hold high nutritional value – can all be recovered and printed in exciting designs.
